Inches Explanation Using Balloons Plus and Blogger Jr.

In this iPad project I have asked my students to take a photo of something small in our classroom alongside a ruler. They the will bring a photo into the free app Balloon Plus and talk about how long the object is and how they know that information. I am hoping that this will assist them with their comparisons and understandings of inches, centimeters and feet.

Base Ten Partial Sums:Number Pieces, Blogger Jr

Base Ten Partial Sums Using the Free App Number Pieces and Blogger Jr. Partial sums can be a very tricky multi process for seven and eight year olds. This year I decided to use the iPads to ensure my students conceptualized this skill. After practicing as a whole class while sharing their work using their iPads via Apple TV my students were asked to solve a math problem using Partial Sums strategy with the free app number pieces. They were then asked to post their work on their digital portfolies via Blogger Jr.

In this project I asked children to make a number sentence using two two digits numbers. They then went into the free app Number Pieces that has base ten blocks. They were then asked to use the base ten blocks to solve the problem using partial sums. This is a great step toward children understanding why we carry and borrow and that the number we carry or borrow is actually a ten or hundred and so forth. This is powerful as we continue to work on partial sums and move toward being able to use the algorithm later in the year.
