In this project I asked children to make a number sentence using two two digits numbers. They then went into the free app Number Pieces that has base ten blocks. They were then asked to use the base ten blocks to solve the problem using partial sums. This is a great step toward children understanding why we carry and borrow and that the number we carry or borrow is actually a ten or hundred and so forth. This is powerful as we continue to work on partial sums and move toward being able to use the algorithm later in the year.
